So Much Hand Sewing – The Cuttle Corner #31

Sharing is caring!

Welcome to the thirty-first edition of The Cuttle Corner! This week, I’ve been doing a ton of hand sewing to make tiny Renaissance Faire costumes!

If you missed last week’s post, you can take a look here.

Now, let’s get cozy!

What’s Going On

My sister and I went on a little adventure to see my favorite comedian, Jackie Kashian. It was a hilarious show. I laughed till I cried, and even stopped breathing at one point (which happens when I laugh really hard).

Live comedy is so much fun! I highly recommend checking out who is performing near you!

What I’m Working On

Sewing

I’ve decided to make four Renaissance Faire costumes for the kiddos we will be going with this year. When I first made this decision, I expected to do a lot of machine sewing to speed up the process. But of course, there is way more hand sewing than I expected. I still have about a month and a half to finish everything, and even with the slight change of plan, I think I can get it all done.

For the girls, I’ve made tiny shifts or smocks or whatever you’d like to call them out of old linen table cloths. One of these is completely done, and the second one just needs the seams finished. I’m about halfway done with that process.

To go over these shifts, I’m making simple kirtles out of a terracotta colored fabric I had in my stash. I have the fabric cut out for both outfits, and the machine sewing done, but there is still a lot of hand sewing to do.

One shift just needs to be hemmed, and some eyelets added to the center front to close it. The second kirtle needs all the edges turned under and whip stitched together, the center front tacked down, and the raw edges around the seams finished. Then it will need a hem and eyelets as well.

My favorite little detail on this kirtle is the neat row of herringbone stitches I used to hold back the center front edge. I was able to utilize the selvages of this fabric, which saved me some work, but I still wanted them to lay nicely. This stitch does a great job and holding fabric in place, and it looks beautiful.

Knitting

I’m still working on my lace weight yoked sweater. Because the rows are so long right now, my progress since last week doesn’t look like much, but it was still a lot of knitting.

The last time I picked this project up, I noticed a large snag that will need to be fixed. I was knitting at the comedy club, so it wasn’t a great place to even the stitches back out. At least a snag like this doesn’t cause the knitting to unravel, it just makes the stitches uneven.

Spinning

I’m this close to finishing plying my polwarth/corriedale/silk blend yarn that I’ve been spinning on my Norwegian spinning wheel. There is only about half a bobbin left, and then it will be all spun up! A quick bath and it will be ready to use.

I’m excited to see the final yarn and find out how much I have to work with. I think it is so pretty how it turned out, and I think it will look even better knit up.

Until next time, keep cuttle-ing!

What are you working on? I’d love to hear about your projects in the comments below!
