The Return of Crafternoon – The Cuttle Corner #11
November 8, 2023
Welcome to the eleventh edition of The Cuttle Corner! Crafternoon is back, I went to a broadway show and I’m taking a stab at writing with NaNoWriMo.
If you missed last week’s post, you can take a look here.
Now, let’s get cozy!
What’s going on
Crafternoon
This weekend was my second time hosting a Crafternoon. We had a couple more people this time, so it is slowly starting to grow.
There was an array of different crafts going on at once: cross-stitching, coloring, sewing, crocheting, and knitting.
Fun fact, this yarn my sister was knitting with was spun by me. It is one of my favorite yarns I’ve spun, although I completely forgot what the fiber content was.
Are there any spinners out there who have a good system for keeping track of all their yarns and fibers? I am always forgetting what I am working with. Let me know your system in the comments!
Hadestown
I try not to bring it up too often because most people aren’t interested, but I am a huge fan of musical theater. At least half of the music on my phone is from musicals. I try to go see live performances when I can, usually once or twice a year.
This weekend I was lucky enough to go see the Broadway tour of Hadestown with my sister. It was amazing! We bought tickets super early and were in the second row on top of the orchestra pit. We were so close it almost felt like we were on stage with the cast.
What I’m working on
Spinning
I’ve started to ply my white mystery yarn (seriously, I don’t know how to keep track of these things) on my Ladybug. I wound my singles up into two center pull balls last week and I am making a two-ply yarn with one end coming from the inside of the center pull ball, and the other end coming from the outside.
Fun fact: I am wearing a bandaid because I cut my finger on a piece of toast (not a typo).
The more I learn about spinning, the more I learn about twist and how it can affect so many things. When you use this technique to ply your yarn, you get different amounts of twist from the center strand and the outer strand, which does change the final yarn.
I don’t mind the mismatched twist. Part of what I love about handspun yarn is the personality. I also love how easy it is to spin from a center pull ball and it leaves no waste.
Crochet
Work continues on my Hygge Burst Granny Square blanket. It is officially longer than it is wide! I’m getting so close to the end. I can’t wait to snuggle up under this blanket.
Knitting
I made it to the next section of my Kildalton cardigan! After finishing the bottom a lot of the stitches are moved to waste yarn and just the front right portion is worked on.
This section already feels like it is knitting up so fast. After knitting over 200 stitches per row these rows seem tiny.
Writing
It shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that my go-to creative endeavors are usually fiber crafts, but I have other interests as well.
Every November is NaNoWriMo, which is an abbreviation of National Novel Writing Month. The idea is to write 50,000 words for a novel in one month. This works out to about 1,667 words a day.
I got random inspiration for a story idea that made me want to participate in NaNoWriMo this year. With everything else I have going on, it’s just not realistic to try to write the full 50,000 words. Instead, I have a daily goal of 200 words with a focus on working every day over the total word count.
So far I have successfully kept up with my goal, even if it is only half an hour a day. Maybe someday I will finish a book. Even if I never finish I am having fun making a story and playing with words. I’m doing daily updates over on my Tumblr if you are interested in that sort of thing.
Until next time, keep Cuttle-ing!
What are you working on? I’d love to hear about your projects in the comments below!
